General

Do I need to be fit to start the programme?

The Goal Master programme meets clients where they are in their lives – in terms of their current fitness, nutrition and lifestyle.  Some of our clients are trained athletes when they come to us. Most clients, however, have led a sedentary lifestyle for many years and have never trained or have never consistently trained.

Our coaches take you on a long journey from whatever your starting point.  One of our many jobs is to transform your relationship with exercise from fear and loathing to enjoyment and excitement.

Will I be required to give up alcohol and food that I love?

No, unless you decide you want to give up alcohol or one or more of the foods you love.  Nothing must be off the menu. If you have a weight loss objective, we coach and educate you about the most effective ways for you to lose fat, retain lean muscle mass, and achieve and sustain your weight loss permanently.  Everyone has a unique set of needs, preferences, lifestyle conditions and physiology. We work with you to create the path that works for you. Though weight loss does require either or both reduced calories or increased physical activity for everyone, no one needs to give up the food and drink they love entirely.

What do I need to bring to my consultation?

Just yourself and an open mind.  You will have completed initial nutrition and lifestyle questionnaires.  Your coach will be ready to greet you, ensure you are at ease and begin your journey.

How is Goal Master different to a normal PT?

Typical personal training involves an hour of being put through often random exercises in a gym. Goal Master is about goal setting and goal achievement, safely, effectively and at a pace and in a manner that enhances, rather than interferes, in your lifestyle. More importantly, Goal Master address the other important pillars of health — nutrition, stress management and sleep quality.

Goal Master coaches are among the most experienced trainers in the industry. They are also nutritionists with proven clinical skills and a track record of coaching sustainable, long term habit change. They are all active participants in the evidenced-based health and fitness community, staying up to date on the latest scientific research. Goal Master’s rigorous recruitment process and ongoing coach education platforms help ensure delivery of unmatched quality coaching.

I am travelling during the next three months so should I wait until I have finished that to start the Goal Master programme?

No.  The fact is that just about all busy professionals would benefit greatly from fitness, nutrition and lifestyle coaching, and there is never a convenient time to do so.  You are incredibly busy at work and at home. Our programme is designed to give you the flexibility to continue to live your life without interference, while ensuring that your fitness and nutrition journey is never interrupted.  While you are away, your coach will continue to support you remotely and help you identify ways to continue training and eating sensibly while you are gone.

I’m afraid to start. I don’t like working out.

Our coaches will take you by the hand and lead you on a journey at a pace that is comfortable for you.  Among other jobs they must do, they must help you change your relationship with exercise from fear and loathing to excitement and enjoyment.  We know this will happen, because we have done it many times.

I don’t have time/I’m too busy at work and at home/I want to wait until I am less busy and can have a clear run at the programme.

In your heart, you know that two things are true:  You need to address your health and fitness and there will never be a convenient time.  Goal Master was created by City professionals who know that addressing fitness must be convenient to be sustainable.  Our programme has the built in flexibility that people need to continue to address their professional and personal responsibilities throughout.

I already have a PT.

If your PT helps you to identify all of your fitness, nutrition and lifestyle goals and coaches you to achieve them successfully, then you do not need Goal Master.  We would be grateful if you could introduce us to your PT so we can approach him or her about a position with us.

I already have a gym membership.

We do not sell gym memberships.  We sell a fitter, leaner, stronger, healthier and happier you.  If your gym membership is all you need to reach your fitness, nutrition and lifestyle goals and you are achieving them on your own, then you do not need Goal Master.

I have tried this sort of thing before and it didn’t work.

As far as we know, this sort of thing has not existed before.  What specifically did you try, and why do you believe it did not work?

I don’t want to look like a bodybuilder.

 Strength training is not about bodybuilding (unless you want it to be). Strength training is about building a toned body, meaning a body that has less fat and more lean muscle than an untoned body.  Most people want a toned body. It is also about weight management and disease prevention.  

 

Women’s bodies produce a fraction of the testosterone that men’s bodies do.  It is physiologically impossible for a woman to look like a bulky bodybuilder without injecting steroids.

I don’t like strength training.

Many people do not like strength training. However our coaches are here to guide you and help you find the enjoyment in exercises you might not have before. Trust us, we’ve changed our client’s minds before. Remember it’s not all about heavy weights. We will incorporate forms of exercise you enjoy more into your programme.

I do marathons, I don’t need Goal Master.

Running marathons can be a tremendous accomplishment.  Well done. If you run marathons, you’ll know that you are putting your body under a considerable amount of oxidative stress, which contributes to aging, impairs the immune system and can lead to many adverse health conditions.  You will also know that in the absence of strength training and good nutrition, you are losing muscle mass as you age, accelerating the decline into old age frailty. We suggest that you do need Goal Master, particularly if you run marathons.

I don’t need Goal Coaching.

We’re sure you can set your own goals. However, by bringing us into the mix we’ll make sure that firstly they are achievable, secondly measurable and thirdly that you are held accountable to them. 

We confess that some of our clients are skeptical about the utility of goal coaching when they start the programme.  However, all skeptics later tell us that goal coaching was hugely beneficial many saying it was the best part of the programme.  Once you have developed a trusting rapport with your Goal Master coach, we are confident you will agree.

I don’t know if I am capable of strength training.

Many people worry that they are not capable of strength training.  We know that you are capable. Our coaches are experts at this and will find the right level to start with for your needs.

I have an injury (e.g. back problem) so cannot go to the gym.

Approximately half our clients come to us with a pre-existing musculoskeletal issue.  We are affiliated with Pure Sports Medicine, a leading London physiotherapist practice.  Following an assessment, our coaches and their physios collaborate in crafting an exercise programme that is appropriate for you.   We can do the same with your physio, if you already have one. Far more often than not, appropriate exercise alleviates the symptoms or helps cure muscular/skeletal issues, including back pain.

You don’t understand my lifestyle.

Goal Master was created because we do understand your lifestyle.  Our founder was a partner in a major international law firm. He retired to found Goal Master after a 35-year career as a very busy corporate lawyer.  Our CEO is a chartered accountant who spent many years working as a management consultant in the City. We know you are busy. You have huge demands on your time in the office and at home.  We offer a programme that is flexible enough to support your lifestyle, not to interfere in it.

I don’t like restrictive dieting. I want to eat what I want.

The good news is that we do not believe in prescriptive diets or diet plans (because they rarely work) and we believe that no food or drink is off limits when losing weight.

My nutrition is fine. I don’t need any help.

If you are sure your nutrition is optimal, then we would invite you to join the programme and we will focus on fitness and lifestyle.  Of course, we would still want to assess your nutrition. Once we have done that, we would wish to discuss with you whether you continue to believe that you do not need any help.

The Goal Master programme is too expensive.

I cannot seem to make permanent changes. I keep ending up back where I started.

I want to train hard. Goal Master will not push me enough.

If you allow us to do so, we are 100% certain that we will prove you wrong.  While many of our clients join us from a sedentary lifestyle, others are well trained athletes committed to fitness.  Our coaches will push you as hard as they can safely push you, if that is what you seek.

I know how to do strength training, I don’t need Goal Master.

If you are sure your strength training is on point and you are achieving your strength training goals, then we would invite you to join the programme and we will focus on nutrition and lifestyle.  Of course, we would still want to assess your strength training. Once we have done that, we would wish to discuss with you whether you continue to believe that you do not need any help.

I have no control over my diet (I eat out in restaurants).

Busy professionals quite commonly eat out in restaurants frequently.  When they don’t, it is not unusual that meals are prepared by others (who control what’s on the menu) or meals are picked up at M&S on the way home.  These scenarios are typical and certainly make it more difficult to control what you eat. Yet, even in restaurants, there is choice. Our programme includes nutrition coaching and education.  We give you the tools you need to make the best choices you can and we give you the space to eat what is in front of you when you cannot choose. We help you reach your fitness and nutrition goals in a way that supports your lifestyle, rather than interfere in it.

How will this benefit out business/why should we commit resources and money to this initiative?

Your senior professionals are your greatest asset.  You know the cost of a fatal heart attack or the cost of replacing people who leave because they are unhappy.  You know that obesity, inactivity and poor nutrition are among the leading causes of cardiovascular disease, many cancers, memory loss and dementia and countless other mental and physical diseases and conditions.
